PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

All Cornell undergraduates are normally required to take two credits (two courses) of Physical Education, one credit each semester of the first year on campus. Students may take more than one PE class per semester, but may only take one for credit.  Registered participants in Cornell Athletics may receive PE credit (sign up during the registration). There are some exceptions for transfer students.
For a complete description of the Physical Education Requirements and exceptions, please see Physical Education Requirements. All requests for accomodations to the Physical Education or Swim Test requirement due to disability must be made through the office of Student Disability Services.

TRANSFERING CREDIT FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS

Any Cornell student who wishes to transfer Physical Education credit from another institution must do so according to the following guidelines:

1) The student must petition Cornell’s Physical Education Department prior to enrollment in a class at another institution to have the class fulfill one of Cornell’s two required Physical Education classes.

2) The desired class must be taught at an accredited college or university. The class must appear on the institution’s web site list of available courses.

3) The class must be an activity based class. (No online classes accepted.)

4) The class must meet a minimum of 24 hours, for which the student must be present at least 20 to pass.

5) The class must be graded. If letter graded, the student must receive a B or better. If pass/fail, the student must receive a pass.

6) The result of the course must appear on that institution’s official transcript.

7) If the petition is approved and the student is not a fulltime registered student at Cornell University, then the student must register through Continuing Education for PE 1999 (Independent Study).

8) After completing the course, the student must arrange to have an official transcript mailed directly from the institution to the Cornell Physical Education Department.

SWIM TEST REQUIREMENT
The University Faculty Committee on Physical Education has established a basic swimming competency requirement for all entering freshman undergraduates. The test is normally taken as part of their SPRING orientation process. The test consists of entering the deep end of the pool with a feet-first jump and making a continuous seventy-five-yard swim using front, back, and optional strokes. Any student who cannot pass the swim test is required to include swimming in his or her program of physical education before choosing electives.

Students unable to meet the swim requirement for medical or other
reasons acceptable to the University Faculty Committee on Physical Education will be required to take one of the following Physical Education classes: Wellness and Fitness (PE1265) or Wilderness First Responder (PE1626) as an alternative to the swimming requirement. All requests for accomodations to the Physical Education or Swim Test requirement due to disability must be made through the office of Student Disability Services.. There are also some exceptions for transfer students.

Swim Tests will be offered on the following days and times:

1. LATE ENROLLMENT FEE: A $30.00 late enrollment fee will be charged to students who enroll in Physical Education after FRIDAY, February 10, 2012 at 4:00 p.m.

2. ABSENCES: Students enrolled in Physical Education are allowed four absences without penalty in each twelve-week course meeting twenty-four times per semester. Proportional adjustments will be established by the instructor for courses that meet for more than forty-five minutes at each session or meet over a period of less than twelve weeks. Absences for medical, religious, academic (ie., field trips), and personal reasons are included in the maximum number of absences, not in addition to the maximum number of absences. It is the student’s responsibility to carefully manage his or her absences so as not to exceed the maximum. If there are extenuating circumstances affecting class attendance and the maximum number of absences permitted, the student must discuss this in person with the instructor immediately. A student exceeding the maximum number of medical absences permitted in one term may receive a medical postponement through the Physical Education Department. Call 255-4286 to make an appointment.

3. The Spring 2012 COURSE CHANGE PERIOD of additions and/or deletions for Physical Education ends at 3:30 p.m. on FEBRUARY 10, 2012. All post deadline drops may be assessed a $30.00 drop fee. Please see specific course information as numerous earlier deadlines exist.

4. CHANGES: Students are normally not permitted to transact changes after FRIDAY, February 11, 2011. However, changes may be transacted for legitimate documentable problems and conflicts. A $30.00 fee may be assessed.

After Friday, February 12, 2012, all post registration course change activity
must be transacted IN PERSON with the Physical Education staff only,
NOT by telephone, NOT on-line, NOT in the office of the College Registrar.

The Physical Education Office is located
in 305 Helen Newman Hall, on the upper floor.

5. NON-ATTENDENCE: If you are enrolled in a course and have numerous absences or fail to attend, all regular course fees and/or penalty fees will be charged. A failing grade will be recorded on the transcript for all students who do not meet the attendance requirement: everyone is enrolled for credit.

NON-ATTENDENCE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A DROP OR EXCLUSION FROM COURSE FEES AND PENALTIES.

6. SWIM TEST FEE: A $30.00 penalty fee will be assessed for all swim tests conducted that do not correspond with the Physical Education Department's identified swim test dates and times, specifically during Spring and Fall semester orientations. If a student requires an individual appointment, a $50.00 fee will be assessed.

7. TRANSCRIPT: Physical Education courses will be graded pass/fail with the results recorded on the transcript.

8. REFUNDS: No refunds will be transacted after the course drop deadline.
