EDUCATION
PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
All Cornell undergraduates are normally required to take
two credits (two courses) of Physical Education,
one credit each semester of the first year on campus. Students may take
more than one PE class per semester, but may only take one for credit. Registered
participants in Cornell Athletics may receive PE credit (sign up during
the registration). There are some exceptions for transfer
students. For a complete description of the Physical Education Requirements
and exceptions, please see Physical
Education Requirements. All requests for accomodations to the Physical Education or Swim Test requirement due to disability must be made through the office of Student Disability Services.
TRANSFERING CREDIT FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS
Any Cornell student who wishes to transfer Physical Education credit from another institution must do so according to the following guidelines:
1) The student must petition Cornell’s Physical Education Department prior to enrollment in a class at another institution to have the class fulfill one of Cornell’s two required Physical Education classes.
2) The desired class must be taught at an accredited college or university. The class must appear on the institution’s web site list of available courses.
3) The class must be an activity based class. (No online classes accepted.)
4) The class must meet a minimum of 24 hours, for which the student must be present at least 20 to pass.
5) The class must be graded. If letter graded, the student must receive a B or better. If pass/fail, the student must receive a pass.
6) The result of the course must appear on that institution’s official transcript.
7) If the petition is approved and the student is not a fulltime registered student at Cornell University, then the student must register through Continuing Education for PE 1999 (Independent Study).
8) After completing the course, the student must arrange to have an official transcript mailed directly from the institution to the Cornell Physical Education Department.
SWIM
TEST REQUIREMENT
The
University Faculty Committee on Physical Education has established
a basic swimming competency requirement for all entering freshman
undergraduates. The test is normally taken as part of their SPRING
orientation process. The test consists of entering the deep
end of the pool with a feet-first jump and making a continuous seventy-five-yard
swim using front, back, and optional strokes. Any student who cannot
pass the swim test is required to include swimming in his or her program
of physical education before choosing electives.
Students unable to meet the swim requirement for medical or other reasons acceptable to the
University Faculty Committee on Physical Education will be required
to take one of the following Physical Education classes: Wellness and Fitness (PE1265) or Wilderness First Responder (PE1626) as an alternative to the swimming requirement. All requests for accomodations to the Physical Education or Swim Test requirement due to disability must be made through the office of Student Disability Services..
