Aquatics - Spring 2022
IMPORTANT: SP 22 Pre-registration will be open to Undergraduates only. Graduates will be allowed to register beginning in January 2022 during the add/drop period.
Students who require make ups in scuba courses, must make the classes up in a scuba course. They may not do make ups in any other PE course.
Notes on Scuba Courses
Because Scuba courses are weather dependent, they have add/drop policies which are different from the normal PE ones. Please read the following carefully.
Swim Test:
All beginning scuba classes require a swim test that is separate from the University swim test. This test consists of swimming 200 yds. continuously and then treading water for 10 minutes. If a student cannot perform this test, they should not register because it is a prerequisite for the course.
Drop Policy:
For all classes this must be done by the published drop date. After that, only medical excuses will be accepted to drop the course. All others will be charged the full course fee, a late drop fee and given a failing grade, if applicable.
Cut Policy:
The following policy has been instituted for scuba diving courses: 1) no absences are allowed; 2) anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late for a class session may not be allowed to continue in the course at the instructor's discretion; 3) if a student is not allowed to continue or completely misses a class, they will be dropped from the course with no refund.
Open Water Dives (Fall semester only):
Please try to make all open water dives on the days you sign up for. "No shows" create problems, both for us (we must reschedule dives and rent more transportation) and for other students (delays and in extreme cases, dive cancellations). In order to be fair to everyone, the following policy has been instituted: any student who is scheduled for an open water dive and fails to show up without giving adequate notice (48 hours), will be charged a fee of $75.00 for rescheduling and the dives will be made up at the convenience of the instructor. Please make sure that you know your open water dive schedule.
All students are required to provide their own mask and snorkel for all classes. These may be brought in from outside or purchased from the department during class orientation.
PE 1100 - Beginning Swimming
Instruction and practice in skills leading to passing the basic swimming proficiency test.
PE 1101 - Advanced Beginning Swimming

Areas of special emphasis are the crawl stroke and rotary breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, diving, treading water, and underwater swimming. The primary objective is to strengthen the student's confidence and competence.
PE 1103 - Advanced Swimming

This class may also cover turns and diving. Students should be able to easily swim a minimum of 300 yds (12 lengths of the pool). Please note that this course is primarily designed as a stroke technique course, not a conditioning course.
PE 1104 - Swimming Conditioning

Please note: This is primarily a conditioning course and not a stroke instruction course. The focus will be on workouts, workout planning and different types of training methods.
